Asteroid Ayashi,, was discovered on December 2, 1988 , by Masahiro Koishikawa an astronomer from Miyagi Prefecture at the Ayashi Observatory of the Sendai Astronomical Observatory

This asteroid was the first naming right Koishikawa had ever received, and it was named "Aiko" after the Aiko Observatory, which was also his family home
