On June 14, 1910 (Meiji 43) , "Tono Monogatari" (Tales of Tono), a collection of folktales written and compiled by folklorist Kunio Yanagita , was published. These tales were based on traditions from the Tono region of Iwate Prefecture, as told by Kizen Sasaki , a folktale collector and novelist from Tsuchibuchi Village in Tono

The first edition had a print run of 350 copies, printed by Kyorinsha, and was self-published with no publishing house. At the time, the work received mixed reviews, but it is now considered a pioneering work in Japanese folklore studies
