Sugae Masumi, a traveler and herbalist of the late Edo period, is said to have died in Kakunodate, Senboku District, Akita Prefecture on July 19, 1829 (August 18, 1829 in the Gregorian calendar), and was buried next to the grave of Kamata Masayoshi, a priest of the Koshio Shrine with whom he had a close relationship.

He is said to have been born in Mikawa Province (present-day Aichi Prefecture), but in his prime he served in the Tsugaru Hirosaki Domain, handling tasks such as medicinal herb collection. Later he served in the Kubota Domain (Akita Prefecture) and remained there ever since

Among the many travelogues he wrote, many were about Akita Prefecture. In 1957, 89 volumes of his handwritten travelogue, "Masumi's Travelogue," were designated as an Akita Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property , and in 1991, they were designated as a National Important Cultural Property

The tomb of Sugae Masumi, located in Terauchi, Akita City, was designated as Akita City's first historical site in 1962 , and was designated as an Akita Prefecture historical site in 2014
