TachibanaMuneshige , a member and senior retainer of the Otomo clan of Kyushu and later the first lord of the Tanagura Domain in Mutsu Province, is believed to have been born on August 18, 1567 (September 20, 1567 in the Gregorian calendar) in Kakei, Kunisaki District, Bungo Province (present-day Bungo-Takada City, Oita Prefecture), as the eldest son of Yoshihiro Shigenori (Takahashi Shoun), a senior retainer of the Otomo clan.

Before being dispossessed of his domain at the Battle of Sekigahara and returning to his status as a daimyo as the lord of the Tanagura Domain, he was one of the leading warlords of Kyushu during the Sengoku period, and was a renowned general highly regarded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as "a remarkable talent of Kyushu."
