table of contents
Goshogawara Tachi-Neputa, which is one of the three major Aomori festivals along with Nebuta in Aomori City and Hirosaki Neputa in Hirosaki City, is held on August 4th every year in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture. This is a summer festival that will be held from the 8th to the 8th.
The brightly colored Neputa and the energetic chants of "Yatte Mare! Yatte Mare!" echo through Aomori's short summer night sky, inspiring and exciting people.
This time, we would like to introduce you to ``Tatekeputa no Yakata,'' a facility where you can experience Goshogawara Tatekeputa, a summer tradition in Aomori, at any time.
What is Goshogawara Tatekaputa?
From the mid-Meiji period to the Taisho period, Goshogawara prospered due to the rich agricultural resources provided by the Tsugaru Plain. It gave birth to powerful merchants and landowners. Soon, these wealthy people started displaying floats (neputa) at summer festivals as a symbol of their power.
Since Neputa was used as a symbol of power and wealth, there was no way it could be outdone by others, and as a result of competition, Neputa gradually grew in size.
For this reason, if you come into contact with someone else's Neputa during the festival, it is normal for arguments to result in fights. It is said that Tachineputa's Yatte Mare shout came from the slogan "Do it!" at that time. It's a pretty disturbing development!
Characteristics of Goshogawara Tatekaputa
The most distinctive feature of Goshogawara Tatekaputa is the size of the Neputa.
The Neputa festival floats are over 20 meters high and weigh around 19 tons, requiring the help of dozens of people to operate them.
On the day of the festival, three of these large-sized ``Jibuta'' will be in operation, as well as medium-sized ``Jibuta'' made by companies and high school students, as well as Hayashi (accompanied by drums, flutes, and hand-held gongs) and ``Haneto'' who will be walking around Goshogawara together. They parade through the city center and liven up the festival.
The mythical Neputa has been brought back to life for the first time in 90 years.
Goshogawara Tachibuta is now one of Aomori Prefecture's most representative summer festivals.
It was during the late Meiji period that Goshogawara City was most active in making giant Neputa festival floats, and at its peak, Neputa floats as tall as 30 meters were being built.
However, with the spread of electric wires, the height of Neputa was restricted, and as the times changed, Neputa became smaller.
After Neputa became smaller, Goshogawara City's tradition of giant Neputa was discontinued, but after Meiji era photographs and drawings of the pedestals were discovered, citizen volunteers started building giant Neputa 22 meters high. Successfully reproduced. In 1996, the festival was revived for the first time in 90 years as ``Goshogawara Tatsuyaputa''.
