Wankosoba Memorial Day is the date of the "Original Wankosoba All Japan Tournament," which is held annually in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture

The "Wankosoba All Japan Tournament" began in 1957 as a competition to see how many bowls of wankosoba can be eaten within a time limit. The competition is modeled after sumo wrestling, with a "gyoji" (gyouji) dressed in a referee's uniform overseeing the bouts, the contestants eating the soba are called "shokushi" (food masters), and the winner is called "yokozuna" (grand champion)
