The day the Tohoku Shinkansen (between Morioka and Hachinohe) opened

On December 1, 2002,the approximately 97km section of the Tohoku Shinkansen line between Morioka Station and Hachinohe Station opened, marking the first time the Shinkansen entered Aomori Prefecture.

At the same time, the "Hayate" train service was also launched as a new fastest express train , shortening the travel time between Tokyo and Hachinohe by approximately 40 minutes compared to before, bringing the fastest journey time to 2 hours and 56 minutes.

Incidentally, Senbei- jiru, a specialty of Hachinohe , is a traditional local dish that has been around since the Edo period. However, it is said that Senbei-jiru, which uses rice crackers made from kneaded wheat flour, began to be promoted in conjunction with the extension of the Tohoku Shinkansen to Hachinohe Station.
