National School Lunch Week is held every year from January 24th to January 30th, and is a week to deepen understanding and interest among students, teachers, parents, and local residents about the significance and role of school lunches

Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture is the birthplace of school lunches

It is said that the first school lunch in Japan began in 1889 (Meiji 22) at "Chūai Elementary School," located on the grounds of Daitoku-ji Temple in Ienaka-shinmachi, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture (then Tsuruoka Town, Yamagata Prefecture) . The lunch consisted of rice balls and side dishes (grilled fish, pickles, simmered dishes, etc.) for children who could not bring their own lunches.
