Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture is the birthplace of school lunches
The first school lunch in Japan is said to have begun in 1889 (Meiji 22) at Chuai Elementary School which was located on the grounds of Daitokuji Temple . It consisted of rice balls and side dishes (grilled fish, pickles, simmered dishes, etc.) served as lunch for children who were unable to bring their own packed lunches.
