May 8th and 9th are designated as "Amber Day " by three companies in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture: Kuji Amber Co., Ltd., Kamiyama Amber Crafts Co., Ltd., and ten-sen Co., Ltd., based on the wordplay of "ko (5) ha (8) ku (9)" .

Amberis a bio-derived organic gemstone formed from fossilized sap secreted by ancient trees tens of millions of years ago.

The color is mainly golden to yellow, and"insect-containing amber,", has high academic value.

Yakushi Festival Plant Market (Yamagata Prefecture)

Every year from May 8th to 10th , the Yakushi Festival Plant Market is held around Yakushi Park in Yakushi-cho, Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture

It is said to have originated when Yoshiaki Mogami, the 11th head of the Mogami clan and the first lord of the Yamagata Domain, called upon the residents to restore greenery to the castle town that had been destroyed by a great fire.
