May 16, 1689 (March 27, 1689 in the old lunar calendar) is the day when Matsuo Basho and his disciple Kawai Sora departed on their journey along the Narrow Road to the Deep North. This day has been designated as "Travel Day" and is a commemorative day for this occasion

It is said that Matsuo Basho "had a strong desire to travel around Tohoku to visit the famous places that were written about in his haiku poems, and he sold his house to raise money for the trip."
