The name "Kokufu" in the station name refers to the government office that was responsible for the politics and administration of Mutsu Province during the Nara and Heian periods. Tagajo was home to the Mutsu Kokufu, and it flourished as a political, military, and cultural center that oversaw castles and fortifications throughout the Tohoku region, hence the name

Nearby, there are numerous facilities and historical sites that tell the story of ancient Tohoku, including the Tohoku Historical Museum, which introduces the history, culture, archaeology, and folklore of the Tohoku region, as well as the Tagajo Castle Ruins, a special historical site, the Tagajo Monument, and the Tagajo Temple Ruins
