The Akita Shinkansen opened on March 22, 1997 as the second mini-shinkansen in history, after the Yamagata Shinkansen

The mini-shinkansen is a system that allows direct operation with the Shinkansen line by changing the track spacing of existing conventional lines, without building new dedicated Shinkansen tracks.The maximum speed on the conventional line section between Morioka Station and Akita Station will be limited to 130 km/h.

The Nationwide Shinkansen Railway Development Act defines a Shinkansen as "a main railway line on which trains can travel at speeds of 200 kilometers per hour or more on the main section," so legally the section is treated as a conventional line and not a Shinkansen
