Asteroid Miyagi., was discovered on April 6 1999 , at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA

After its discovery, it was given the provisional designation "1999 GL47" for a long time, but following the Great East Japan Earthquake, it was officially named on May 9, 2012, in honor of Miyagi Prefecture , which suffered significant damage

The following 11 asteroids were also named and announced at the same time for the same reasons as Miyagi

  • Aizu
  • Iwate
  • Aomori
  • Ibaraki
  • Tochigi
  • Chiba Prefecture
  • Hamadori
  • Nakadori
  • Rikuzentakata
  • Sakae Village
