Jionji Temple boasts a long history and vast grounds

Jionji Temple, said to have been founded by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period , is a temple with a long history of 1,300 years. Unlike typical temples, it does not have parishioners, and has played the role of a "temple of religious services" where prayers are offered for the peace and prosperity of the nation and its lords

Jionji Temple

During the Edo period, the temple was granted a vast territory of 2,800 koku by the shogunate, and it became famous as a large temple complex with 3 sub-temples and 48 monks' quarters centered around the main hall . It is also famous as a "treasure trove of cultural properties," housing more than 200 valuable cultural artifacts created from the Heian period to the Kamakura period.

In particular , the twelve standing statues of the Twelve Heavenly Generals enshrined in the Yakushido Hall have attracted attention both domestically and internationally, having been exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum and in exhibitions in Italy and Rome. In 2014, the vast former temple grounds, covering approximately 446,000 square meters (about the size of 10 Tokyo Domes), were designated as a national historic site
