On March 10, 1985 (Showa 60),the main tunnel of the Seikan Tunnel was completed, connecting Honshu and Hokkaido by land.

The Seikan Tunnel (also known as the Seikan Tunnel) is a 53.85 km long railway tunnel that connects Imabetsu Town, Higashitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture on Honshu with Shiriuchi Town, Kamiiso District, Hokkaido, and was the longest undersea tunnel in the world at the time

Near the entrance on the Aomori Prefecture sidethe "Seikan Tunnel Entrance Plaza"has been developed, and a "Tunnel Shrine" has been erected to commemorate the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.

The sacred object is a stone that was unearthed when the main tunnel was completed , and a "penetration stone" that was preserved by local residents is also installed on the right side of the worship hall.

Every year on March 10th , the Hote Festival is held at Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture

This fire prevention ritual has been performed since the Edo period, and its highlight is the procession of the portable shrine, whichthe three greatest "fire-fighting" portable shrines in Japan. Sixteen bearers carry the shrine, which weighs over one ton, down the 202 steep steps of the main approach known as Otoko-zaka, parading through the city, and then return up the stairs once more to conclude the ritual.
