At that time, service was only availablebetween Omiya Station and Morioka Station. Later,in March 1985, the section between Ueno Station and Omiya Station opened. In June 1991, when the line was transferred from Japanese National Railways to East Japan Railway Company (JR East),the section between Tokyo Station and Ueno Station opened.

Then, after a gap of about ten years,the section between Morioka Station and Hachinohe Station opened in December 2002 (Heisei 14), andthe section between Hachinohe Station and Shin-Aomori Station opened in December 2010 (Heisei 22), completing the entire line 39 years after the development plan was decided.
