The Tohoku Expressway , a major artery planned with the aim of promoting industry in the Tohoku region and strengthening logistics with the Tokyo metropolitan area , was fully opened on September 9, 1987 (Showa 62) , with the opening of the Kawaguchi JCT to Urawa IC section (4.8 km) which connects to the Metropolitan Expressway .

This event took place approximately 14 years and 10 months after the section between Iwatsuki IC and Utsunomiya IC was first opened in November 1972 (Showa 47)
