on October 29, 1976 (Showa 51), a fire broke out at the "Green House" movie theater in Nakamachi 2-chome, Sakata City. Fueled by strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, resulting in a major disaster in which 1,774 buildings across approximately 225,000 square meters (22.5 hectares) of the shopping district in the center of Sakata City were destroyed by fire by the following morning.

While there were no civilian casualties, one fire chief from the Sakata District Fire Department lost his life in the line of duty
