On December 24, 1600 (November 19, 5th year of the Keicho era), Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai Domain, changed the place name from "Chiyo""Sendai,"thus giving rise to the name "Sendai."

Incidentally, the name "Sendai" itself has been around for a very long time, and it is said that the kanji characters used to represent it changed from "千躰" > "千代" > "仙臺 (仙台)"
