On April 1, 1989 (the first year of the Heisei era) , which also marked the 100th anniversary of the city's incorporation , Sendai City became the 11th designated city in Japan, and five administrative districts were established: Aoba Ward, Miyagino Ward, Wakabayashi Ward, Taihaku Ward, and Izumi Ward.

This transition made Sendai the first designated city in the Tohoku region
