The origin of Chushingura: the Ako Incident (Asano Takumi no Kami commits seppuku at the Ichinoseki domain residence)

On March 14th of the 14th year of the Genroku era in the old lunar calendar (April 21st, 1701 in the Gregorian calendar), at the hour of the snake (slightly after 11:30 a.m.),Asano Takumi-nofrom behindKira Kozuke-no-with a dagger, causing a sword fight within the Edo Castle.

On the day of the incident, an emissary from the Imperial Court was visiting Edo Castle for a ceremony, and Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi was furious, ordering Asano Takumi no Kami to commit seppuku that very same day

Subsequently,the Tamura family of the Ichinoseki domainwas ordered to take custody of Asano Takumi-no-kami after the incident. He was escorted to the Ichinoseki domain residence on the evening of the day of the incident, and less than an hour later,Asano Takumi-no-kami was executed by seppuku in the garden of the Ichinoseki domain residence.

The revenge drama stemming from this incident is the famous story of"Chushingura,"is featured in Kabuki and Bunraku puppet plays (Kanadehon Chushingura).

*Although the date is April 21st in the Gregorian calendar,the day of the 47 Ronin's raid (Chushingura Day)is observed on December 14th in the old lunar calendar, so the date is listed according to the old lunar calendar.
