Sendai Station opened on December 15, 1887 (Meiji 20) as a railway station on the Tohoku Main Line operated by the Nippon Railway (later Japanese National Railways)

Until then, the journey between Tokyo and Sendai took three nights and four days using intercity stagecoaches , but with the extension of this railway, the travel time was reduced to approximately 12 hours and 20 minutes (to Ueno Station)

As of 2026, the station is served by the Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, Senzan Line, Senseki Line, Joban Line, Senseki Tohoku Line, Sendai Airport Access Line, Abukuma Express Line, Rikuu East Line, and Sendai Municipal Subway

As of 2026, five lines run through the area: JR East's Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, and Ou Main Line, as well as the Abukuma Express - Abukuma Express Line and Fukushima Transportation - Iizaka Line
