Osaki Hachiman Shrine's Matsutaki Festival (Miyagi Prefecture)

In many areas of Miyagi Prefecture, a type of fire festival for the Little New Year called "Dontosai" at Osaki Hachiman Shrine , which is the largest in Miyagi Prefecture and is thought to be the original birthplace of this festival (※), it is held "Matsutaki Festival .

*It is believed that the event of burning New Year's decorations was unique to Osaki Hachiman Shrine until around 1880 (Meiji 13)

Similar fire festivals are held all over Tohoku, but the dates vary slightly depending on the region; for example, Morioka Hachiman Shrine in Iwate Prefecture holds its festival on January 15th, while Nishine Shrine in Fukushima Prefecture holds it for several days together with the Usokae Festival
