In many areas of Miyagi Prefecture, a type of fire festival called "Dontosai" is held from the evening of January 14th, the day before the Little New Year. However, at Osaki Hachimangu Shrine , which is considered to be the largest and original site of the festival in Miyagi Prefecture , it is held under the name "Matsutaki Matsuri" (pine burning festival)

*It is believed that the event of burning New Year's decorations was unique to Osaki Hachiman Shrine until around 1880 (Meiji 13)

Similar fire festivals are held all over Tohoku, but the dates vary slightly depending on the region; for example, Morioka Hachiman Shrine in Iwate Prefecture holds its festival on January 15th, while Nishine Shrine in Fukushima Prefecture holds it for several days together with the Usokae Festival
