Head to Iwaki and try swordfish! Unique menu items are constantly being added! [Fukushima Prefecture]

Off the coast of Iwaki is a "tidal sea" where warm and cold currents meet. It is world-famous as a marlin fishing ground, and there is a record of the largest marlin ever caught in Japan being landed here

By the way, what is "marlin"?

They are large, fast-paced migratory fish, and swordfish, marlin, and blue marlin inhabit the waters off Japan.Even small species can reach a total length of 1m, while larger species can reach a total length of 4m

Of course, it is edible and is a familiar fish in Iwaki

Not only Japanese and Western cuisine, but also sweets! This is Iwaki's new swordfish!

Iwaki has launched a town revitalization project centered around swordfish, and restaurants in the city offer swordfish dishes, but if you want to combine sightseeing with a visit, head to Onahama first

At the restaurants in the Onahama Gourmet Hotel (which is called a hotel, but is actually a complex that includes restaurants and souvenir shops), Iwaki Lalamew, and Aquamarine Fukushima, you can try unique swordfish dishes such as swordfish buns, which are steamed buns filled with swordfish, swordfish cutlet bowls with sauce and swordfish cutlet bowls with miso, and Onahama swordfish gyoza, all topped with surprisingly large swordfish cutlets

Among them, the one you absolutely must try
is the "Kajiki Menchi," a minced cutlet made with plenty of swordfish meat. You can take out freshly fried ones, one at a time, from the Kajikiya restaurant inside the Onahama Gourmet Hotel.

When you bite into the hot minced meat cutlet, the fragrant batter is soft and moist inside. There's not the slightest bit of fishy smell, and the umami of the swordfish is combined with the subtle sweetness of the onion, making it delicious! It has a strong flavor, so you can eat it as is, or pour the sauce over it and eat it with cabbage or rice, which is also irresistible

It's no wonder that this dish was chosen as the national champion of the Sea Gourmet Championship

Swordfish Pudding

And here is "Kajiki de Pudding," which went on sale at Onahama Gourmet Hotel in April 2017.
It's an original sweet made with swordfish, developed over five years by the Kajiki Gourmet Executive Committee.

When you hear about sweets made with fish, you might imagine something strange or unusual, but that's just a prejudice.
This rich dessert features a custard cream filling inside a pudding and caramel-flavored dough. The dough is made with rice flour from "Iwaki Raiki," a premium brand of Koshihikari rice from Iwaki, and also incorporates marlin bone meal, so you can get some calcium from it too.
It costs 200 yen (excluding tax) per piece. It can be stored at room temperature, making it perfect as a souvenir.

Get energized with swordfish! It actually contains some amazing ingredients!

Swordfish is very healthy because it is low in calories and high in protein. It is also suitable for dieting. What's more, it is rich in imidapeptides, a compound that is expected to have a fatigue recovery effect

If you visit Iwaki, be sure to enjoy plenty of delicious swordfish!
