Hachinohe Sansha Festival (Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture)

A gorgeous float procession combined with a Shinto ritual

The Hachinohe Sansha Festival, which boasts a history of around 300 years, is a festival that combines Shinto rituals held around the three shrines of Silla Shrine, Shinmei Shrine, and Chojayama Silla Shrine with a spectacular float procession. The floats, which can reach heights of up to 10 meters, incorporate gimmicks and movements, captivating spectators day and night

Hirosaki Neputa Festival (Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture)

A fantastic sight as fan neputa lights up the night sky

Hirosaki Neputa, known as a festival on a par with Aomori's Nebuta, features fan-shaped lanterns painted with heroic warriors that are paraded through the city. While the atmosphere is a little more subdued than Aomori's Nebuta, the festival is memorable for its melancholic drumming and chants

Noshiro Tanabata "Sleepless City in the Sky" (Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture)

The tallest Tanabata lantern in Japan

As the name "Sleepless City in the Sky" suggests, giant Tanabata lanterns tower over 20 meters above ground into the night sky. This festival, which revives the historic Noshiro Tanabata event in modern times, captivates spectators with its fantastic lighting and impressive floats. The spectacle truly lives up to the name "Sleepless City."

Goshogawara Tachineputa (Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture)

A spectacular parade of 23-meter-tall "giant moving dolls"!

Goshogawara's Tachineputa, one of the three major Nebuta festivals in Aomori, is characterized by its giant lantern dolls that stand over 20 meters tall. The colorful lights and dynamic music create an overwhelming presence in the city at night

Koriyama Uneme Festival (Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture)

This summer festival in Koriyama commemorates the Uneme, a female court lady from a legend from the Heian period. The Uneme Odori Nagashi dance flows through the city center, with over 100 groups dancing gracefully in yukata robes. It's a heartwarming festival in which all the local residents take part
