Hachinohe Sansha Festival (Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture)

A gorgeous float procession combined with a Shinto ritual

The Hachinohe Sansha Festival, which boasts a history of around 300 years, is a festival that combines Shinto rituals held around the three shrines of Silla Shrine, Shinmei Shrine, and Chojayama Silla Shrine with a spectacular float procession. Hirosaki Neputa Festival (Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture)

A fantastic sight as fan neputa lights up the night sky

Hirosaki Neputa, known as a festival on a par with Aomori's Nebuta, features fan-shaped lanterns painted with heroic warriors that are paraded through the city. While the atmosphere is a little more subdued than Aomori's Nebuta, the festival is memorable for its melancholic drumming and chants

Noshiro Tanabata "Sleepless City in the Sky" (Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture)

The tallest Tanabata lantern in Japan

As the name "Sleepless City in the Sky" suggests, giant Tanabata lanterns tower over 20 meters above ground into the night sky. This festival, which revives the historic Noshiro Tanabata event in modern times, captivates spectators with its fantastic lighting and impressive floats. The spectacle truly lives up to the name "Sleepless City."
