The first bombardment occurred on July 14, 1945 , by the battleships South Dakota, Indiana, and Massachusetts, the heavy cruisers Chicago and Quincy, and nine destroyers of Task Force 34.8.1, a division of the U.S. Navy's Task Force 38, resulting in the deaths of 431 civilians.

The second on August 9, 1945 , by the same US Navy Task Force 34.8.1 and the Royal Navy Task Force 37.1.8 (two light cruisers and three destroyers), resulting in the deaths of 283 civilians.

Hirata Village Hydrangea Memorial Day (Fukushima Prefecture)

This commemorative day was established by July 14th, 2018, when Jupia Land Hirata, a park facility in Hirata Village, Ishikawa County, Fukushima Prefecture, was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records on display." This is also the time of year when the hydrangeas in the park reach their peak of bloom.
