The first attack occurredon July 14, 1945, when the battleships USS South Dakota, USS Indiana, USS Massachusetts, the heavy cruisers USS Chicago and USS Quincy, and nine destroyers of Task Force 34.8.1, which was spun off from the US Navy's Task Force 38, carried out a shelling attack, resulting in 431 civilian casualties.

The second time,on August 9, 1945, the same group that had attacked the area—the US Navy's Task Force 34.8.1 and the British Navy's Task Force 37.1.8 (two light cruisers and three destroyers)—fired the area, resulting in 283 civilian casualties.
