[Aomori Prefecture] Which cider is recommended? We actually tried them all!

In Aomori, the "Kingdom of Apples," apple-based alcoholic beverages called "cider" are gaining attention. There's a wide variety, from fruity and sweet to dry and authentic. This time, I, a local resident, will introduce three of my top recommendations based on my own taste tests! You're sure to find the perfect cider for you.

Aomori cider is hot! Learn why it's so popular

Aomori-made cider is truly a drink filled with "love for apples." 100% of the apples used are locally grown, and the flavor varies greatly depending on the variety and production method. For example, cider made from sweet and juicy varieties is fruity and approachable, making it easy to drink even for women. Conversely, using varieties with strong astringency and acidity results in a deep, wine-like flavor. Aomori Prefecture, Japan's top apple producer, cultivates approximately 50 different apple varieties. Because Aomori truly understands apples, the variety and taste of its cider are exceptional.

Unlike beer or whiskey, cider is made without grains, so it contains zero purines and is gluten-free. One bottle (750ml) of cider contains four to five apples, so it's also good for your skin

Perfect as a gift

Another appealing feature of Aomori cider is its stylishness. The sophisticated designs of the bottles and labels make it a perfect souvenir or gift. With a low alcohol content of 2-9%, it's an easy gift even for those who don't like alcohol. It's becoming increasingly popular both within and outside the prefecture as a souvenir that combines "Aomori-ness" with "good taste." If you're thinking, "Apple juice is a bit too ordinary, but I'd like to give a souvenir related to apples," or "I'm having trouble finding a gift for someone who doesn't like sweet things," why not give Aomori cider as a gift?

3 ciders recommended by locals! We actually tried them out and compared them

This time, I actually tasted and compared different ciders and will introduce three that I personally recommend

  • Tugboat Co., Ltd. "Crazy Cider"
  • Nikka Hirosaki "Nama Cider"
  • Tamura Farm "Tamura Cider"
  • Hirosaki Cider Factory "kimori"
  • Hirosaki Meishu Co., Ltd. "Hirosaki Castle Shidol"

1. Tugboat Co., Ltd. "Crazy Cider"

Crazy Cider: SWEET on the left, DRY on the right

made in Hirakawa CityCrazy Cider,. It's a drink packed with the charm of apples from Aomori Prefecture.

CrazyCider Dryhas a surprisingly bold flavor for a cider. It's not overly sweet, and while there's some bitterness and astringency, it's not unpleasant. You can also taste the natural sweetness of the apples, so even heavy drinkers should be satisfied. The alcohol content is 7%, which is about the same as or slightly higher than canned chu-hi (Japanese alcoholic beverage). Its crisp, refreshing finish makes it a good pairing for meat dishes.

"Crazy Cider SWEET" is surprisingly refreshing. I've always thought of cider as sweet, but even the sweet version has such a crisp taste. It's sweet yet refreshing, so it seems like you could drink it in any situation. I think it's a genuine flavor that can be enjoyed not only by alcohol lovers, but also by people who don't usually like alcohol.

2. Hirosaki Cider Factory "kimori"

kimori Left is SWEET, right is DRY

Next up is "kimori" in Hirosaki City. It's a cider brewery located next to Hirosaki Apple Park, and they use apples carefully grown by local farmers.

"Kimori Dry" has an alcohol content of 6%. It has a pleasant acidity and a crisp, dry taste. While it lacks the impact of Crazy Cider Dry, it's perfect as a drink to accompany a meal. It pairs especially well with salty snacks such as cheese and prosciutto, and is recommended to enjoy with a meal. There is a slight bitterness and astringency, but it is not noticeable when eaten with food.

Conversely, "Kimori Sweet" has a sweetness reminiscent of apple juice. With an alcohol content of 3%, the sweet version is recommended for those who don't like strong alcohol or for women. The carbonation isn't too strong, so it seems like it would be easy to drink even after a meal.

Both drinks are made from whole apples, so the ingredients will settle to the bottom of the bottle. Please turn the bottle upside down gently before drinking

3. Tamura Farm "Tamura Cider 2nd"

Tamura Cider 2nd: SWEET on the left, DRY on the right

produced by Tamura FarmTamura Cider 2nd,. As it's made by an apple farmer in Hirosaki City, it's a cider I'd recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a casual drink.

First,Tamura Cider 2nd Dryis its rich aroma, so intense it's as if it's packed with tropical fruits. While the aroma is sweet, the taste has a pleasant tartness, making it less sweet than you might expect. With an alcohol content of 5%, it's lower than other dry ciders and quite easy to drink. It has almost no alcoholic aroma, making it a confident recommendation for those new to alcohol.

TamuraCider 2nd Sweet, like the DRY version, boasts a fruity aroma. This cider has a gentle sweetness that matches its aroma. It's not as sweet as apple juice, but its clean finish makes it a good match for lean dishes. With an alcohol content of 3%, it's perfect for when you want to relax. As it's an affordable cider, it's also great for everyday use.
