5 recommended wineries in Miyagi Prefecture! Look forward to the growth of these young wineries!
table of contents
Did you know that Miyagi Prefecture, the home of Sasanishiki, has the lowest fruit production in the Tohoku region?
There were no wineries in the prefecture at the time, but in an effort to regain vitality as the prefecture recovered from the Great East Japan Earthquake, five wineries were established in the prefecture and winemaking from grape cultivation has begun
Akiu Winery (Sendai City)
Opened in 2015, it is the oldest winery in the prefecture and the only one in Sendai city. The brewery is located in the middle of Akiu Onsen town, about a 30-minute drive from JR Sendai Station, among the vineyards that spread out at the foot of the mountains on the north bank of the Natori River
There is a restaurant and cafe attached to the property where you can enjoy food and wine while looking out over the vineyards
The cool breezes that blow through Akiu's valleys and rivers allow the grapes here to ripen fully while retaining their acidity, and the red, white, and rosé wines made from these grapes have an exquisite balance of sweetness and acidity
In addition to wine, apple shields are also brewed
RIVER WINDS BLANC 2021 (White: Delaware, Neo Muscat)

Riverwinds Bran is a blend of both tart and ripe Delaware grapes
This fruity white wine has a brilliant pale yellow color and a complex aroma of honey, pear, flowers, and herbs, and has a pleasant acidity and gentle sweetness

Fattoria AL FIORE (Kawasaki Town)
This winery is located in a small town surrounded by nature at the foot of Mount Zao in Miyagi
The husband and wife chefs of the Italian restaurant "AL FIORE" in Sendai City opened a farm and planted grape vines in an effort to attract people to Kawasaki Town, which is suffering from depopulation, through winemaking
In addition to grapes grown on the premises, the winery also uses grapes from nearby farms and those from Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture
Temperature control is left to nature, and the wines are brewed using wild yeast that grows on the grapes, preserving the original flavor and aroma of the grapes, and are shipped without the addition of antioxidants. The flagship lineup includes the "FATTORIA AL FIORE SERIES," which is painstakingly aged for special occasions, and the "NECO SERIES," which allows you to easily enjoy the fruity flavor of grapes
Kamoshikawa Wine 2021 (Red: 80% Steuben, 11% Bailey A, 9% Pinot Noir)
The wine, named after the "kamoshika" (kamoshika), an animal native to Kawasaki Town, is a popular brand made every year from a blend of various grapes
The winery's husband and wife team create this wine with gratitude to Kawasaki Town and its residents, and it is a wine that can only be found in that year. 2018 was a red wine, 2019 was a white, and 2020 and 2021 were reds. We'll have to wait until 2022 is released to find out what happens

Minamisanriku Winery (Minamisanriku Town)
In April 2017, a wine project began to plant grape vines in Minamisanriku, a town surrounded by sea and mountains. The brewery was completed in October 2020 and opened in the Shizugawa district as a winery with ocean views. The restaurant opened in 2020, allowing visitors to enjoy the marriage of Minamisanriku's seafood and mountain produce while looking out over Shizugawa Bay
They sell a wide variety of wines made with grapes harvested from the fields of Minamisanriku Town, as well as grapes from Yamagata and Yamanashi
We recommend the "Undersea Aged Wine," which is aged for six months on underwater shelves alongside delicious oysters from Shizugawa Bay. Wines such as Chardonnay and Merlot become delicious after sleeping in the ocean
Shizugawa Bay Underwater Aged Wine CHARDONNAY 2021 (White: 100% Chardonnay)
This dry Chardonnay has been aged to a mellow flavor, lulled by the various sounds of the ocean. A Merlot red wine is also aged underwater, allowing you to compare it with wines aged on land

Ryomi Vineyard & Winery (Yamato Town)
We produce high-quality wine from grapes grown in the well-drained pastures of Yamato Town, which is surrounded by the natural beauty of mountains and water
There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy dishes made with vegetables grown on the premises and local ingredients, as well as condominiums with individual rooms where you can stay in the vineyard
The name "Ryobi" comes from one character each of the first names of the owner and his wife, who are both from the local area. They cultivate six varieties for red wine and five varieties for white wine, all of which have just become ready for harvest, and also use grapes from outside the prefecture
Among them, we would like to recommend a carefully selected bottle that is considered to be the flagship of Merlot
Zephyr Merlot Private Reserve 2020 (Red: 100% Merlot)
Made from high-quality Merlot, this red wine has a rich aroma of berries such as violets and plums, and features a firm, fleshy body and delicate, high-quality tannins

Osaki Winery (Osaki City)
This small winery was opened in 2019 by a farmer who grows table grapes. The brewery is located in a small, garage-like building near JR Furukawa Station, and produces fresh, easy-to-drink wines
They offer three types of wine: red, white, and rosé, all made from grapes that have been cultivated for a long time for eating
Although table grapes have a lot of juice, they lack sugar content and concentration, so the skin is thin to make them easier to eat, which results in a lighter color and flavor, but in return, they produce a fresh wine that is easy for anyone to drink
Osaki Harvest 2021 (Red: 100% Campbell Early)
In addition to red wine, we also recommend white and rosé wines. Osaki Brew 2021 (white: 100% Niagara) and Osaki Banquet 2021 (rosé: 100% Steuben) are both easy to drink yet robust and delicious
In addition, two types of sparkling wine, white and rosé, were released in 2021
