Aomori Prefecture: 3 Recommended Wineries and Cider Breweries! Introducing wine and cider from this apple-producing region!

Aomori, the northernmost prefecture on Honshu, is famous for its apples, but it also produces a lot of grapes, with three areas in the central and northern parts of the prefecture, including Tsuruta Town, Nanbu Town, and Hirakawa Town, producing 50% of the prefecture's grapes

These grapes were mainly local varieties such as Steuben and Campbell Early, but recently European wine varieties such as Merlot and Pinot Noir have also been grown in various parts of the prefecture

The six Tohoku prefectures are known for their delicious sake, which is made possible by the delicious water they use. Aomori Prefecture also uses the delicious water that springs from the Shirakami Mountains, a World Heritage Site, to make wine

Sanmarumo Winery (Mutsu City)

This winery began growing grapes on the Shimokita Peninsula in 1998 and has brewing facilities in two locations within the prefecture

MK Vineyard in Mutsu City produces a red Pinot Noir wine called Shimokita Wine, and the Second Factory in Owani Town produces a white wine called Tsugaru Wine using Steuben grapes grown in the prefecture

In addition to the two flagship brands, the winery also sells white, red, and rosé wines made from different grape varieties, as well as sparkling wine, apple sparkling wine, and apricot wine

Shimokita Wine Ryo (Red: 100% Pinot Noir)

This is the flagship wine of San Mamoru Winery

Pinot Noir grown on the Shimokita Peninsula is a red wine with a silky texture and a strawberry jam-like aroma, and is low in astringency with a good balance of fruitiness and acidity

Tsugaru Wine White Steuben (White: 100% Steuben)

This white wine has a sweet floral nectar aroma and a sweet and sour taste, but is also dry and light to drink, making it easy to drink too much. It pairs well with seafood, making it a great pairing with sashimi or sushi
