At approximately 2:46 p.m. on March 11, 2011 the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, with its epicenter at a depth of approximately 24 km, approximately 130 km east-southeast of the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture, off the coast of Sanriku

The moment magnitude (Mw) , an indicator of the earthquake's large tremors with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 to 6+ across eastern Japan The resulting massive tsunami and fires resulted in 22,332 deaths and missing persons across 12 prefectures, mainly in the Tohoku region .

This was the third largest earthquake damage in Japan since the Meiji era, after the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Meiji Sanriku Earthquake, and the magnitude of the earthquake itself was the largest ever recorded in the vicinity of Japan
