At approximately 2:46 PM on March 11, 2011off the coast of Sanriku, about 130 km east-southeast of the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture, with its epicenter at a depth of approximately 24 kmthe Great East Japan Earthquakeoccurred

The earthquake,a moment magnitude (Mw) of 9.0,strong shaking with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 to 6+Furthermore, the resultingtsunami and firesin 12 prefectures, mainly in the Tohoku regionresulted in 22,332 deaths and missing persons.

This earthquake was the third largest in terms of damage since the Meiji era in Japan, following the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Meiji Sanriku Earthquake, and the magnitude of the earthquake itselfthe largest ever recorded in the vicinity of Japanwas
