The day the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred

At approximately 2:46 PM on March 11, 2011 , the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred off the coast of Sanriku, about 130 km east-southeast of the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture, with its epicenter at a depth of approximately 24 km

The earthquake, with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 9.0 , caused strong shaking with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 to 6+ in various parts of eastern Japan. Furthermore, the resulting tsunami and fires resulted in 22,332 deaths and missing persons in 12 prefectures, mainly in the Tohoku region .

This earthquake was the third largest in terms of damage since the Meiji era in Japan, following the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Meiji Sanriku Earthquake, and the magnitude of the earthquake itself was the largest ever recorded in the vicinity of Japan
