The day of the US air raid on Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture)

On July 10, 1945 , towards the end of World War II , the US military carried out an air raid on Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture , known as the "Sendai Air Raid ," which reduced the central part of Sendai to rubble.

According to U.S. military records, 12,961 incendiary and cluster incendiary bombs, weighing 911.3 tons, were dropped during this air raid, resulting in 1,064 casualties and 335 unidentified or missing persons who are presumed to have been killed .

In addition to Sendai, air raids were also carried out on that day in Wakayama, Sakai in Osaka Prefecture, Gifu, and Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture

In December 2021, a plaque marking the "bombing centerline" —the target of the incendiary bombs dropped by the US military during the Sendai air raids— was installed in a corner of the Chris Road shopping arcade in central Sendai, as part of an effort to pass on the memory of the war.
