Hayachine Shrine Somin Festival (Iwate Prefecture)

Every year on March 17th, the Somin Festival, a type of naked festival, is held at Hayachine Shrine in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. In this festival, men compete to grab a "Somin bag" containing 365 chess pieces branded with the twelve zodiac animals , praying for protection from illness and good health .
