In 1600,the Battle of Hasedo, often called the "Sekigaharaof Dewa Province," he fought against the forces of Naoe Kanetsugu, a senior retainer of Uesugi Kagekatsu. For his achievements in this battle, he was recognized as the owner of the conquered Shonai region and other territories. He came to rule over a total of570,000 koku, encompassing all of present-day Yamagata Prefecture (excluding Okitama District, which was Uesugi territory) and Yuri District, establishing the largest territory of the Mogami clan and becoming the first lord of the Dewa Yamagata Domain.
