This day was established to commemorate the official naming and birth of Morioka Reimen, a specialty dish representing Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, created by Pyonpyontei, the predecessor of Pyonpyonsha, a famous cold noodle restaurant that is still famous today, at the Nippon Noodle Summit held on October 17, 1986 (Showa 61).

Morioka reimen originated in the yakiniku restaurant "Shokudoen" , where the owner, Teruhito Aoki, is said to have recreated the reimen from his hometown (present-day North Korea) in 1954 (Showa 29).
