In this article, we will introduce three hot springs with particularly recommended water qualities from among the hot springs known as hidden hot springs and famous hot springs in Aomori Prefecture
Sukayu, a gift from Mount Hakkoda (Aomori City)

Sukayu is a single inn located in the Hakkoda Mountains, but its address is in the southern part of Aomori City, the prefectural capital, which has a large area
Its history is said to date back to 1684 in the early Edo period, and despite being located in the mountains far from civilization, it has long been visited by many people seeking medical treatment, and in 1954 (Showa 29) it was designated as the "first national hot spring resort."

The ceiling of the 160-tatami large bath is 5 meters high, but there are no pillars, so it has a good view. House martins have built a nest in the attic, and can be seen flying around in the snow-free seasons

The large public bath has five baths, the largest of which is called the "Hiba Senninburo" (Cypress Bath) there are designated women-only times (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM)

Shimofuro Onsenkyo, where three hot springs spring up from the Shimokita Peninsula (Kazamaura Village, Shimokita District)

The effects of these hot springs are so strong that the literary giant Yasushi Inoue was so impressed that , "Ah, the hot water is seeping out," in "Straits," . The quality of the springs from the three sources is as follows:
- Oyu type: "acidic, sulfuric acid-containing, sodium chloride, sulfate spring", milky, cloudy water
- New spring: "Sulfur-containing sodium chloride spring", almost colorless and transparent
- Hamayu: "Boric acid-sulfur-containing sodium-calcium chloride spring" - milky blue and thick

Oyu has three more springs and Hamayu has two, each with a slightly different quality, so technically there are six springs, but all of them are acidic hydrogen sulfide waters with a strong sulfur smell. They are
effective for chronic skin diseases, cuts, burns, chronic gynecological diseases, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, muscle pain, joint pain, and digestive disorders.

This historic inn, whose history as a hot spring resort dates back to the Muromachi period, has hot spring water from the Hamayu source flowing directly into two open-air baths

The two indoor baths are artificial hot springs that use Komyo stone, a natural mineral containing radioactive elements, and the water is just right for relaxing your body after being stimulated by the strong spring water in the open-air bath

The rooms overlook the Tsugaru Strait and Hokkaido in the distance, and include calming Japanese-style rooms and Japanese-Western style rooms with beds. All rooms are equipped with heated toilets and bathrooms

Meals are prepared according to the season, focusing on fresh local seafood such as monkfish, Oma tuna, and black abalone. Breakfast includes dishes like live squid sashimi and grilled scallops with miso, making you want to have a drink right from the morning

Furutoube Onsen, a hidden hot spring in the mountains that is popular nationwide (Hirakawa City)

Located in the mountains on the border of Aomori Prefecture, further towards Akita than Ikarigaseki Onsen, this hot spring is a beloved local hot spring resort that has long been popular among hot spring enthusiasts, attracting visitors from all over the country
The hot spring first gushed forth in 1975 due to drilling for mining black ore (zinc ore, chalcopyrite, etc.), and has a plentiful flow of 500 liters per minute. The hot spring is free-flowing without adding water or heating

The water from the artesian spring is drinkable and transparent with a slight greenish tint and a metallic smell. It is said to a sodium-calcium chloride spring, bicarbonate spring, and sulfate spring , and has a strong carbonated component that feels like it slowly seeps into the skin.
The water temperature is 42°C, which is neither too hot nor too lukewarm
"Furuobe Onsen Ryokan" where you can have a comfortable "Todo-ne"

The inn has no mobile phone reception and only one small indoor bath for men and one for women, but both baths are filled with abundant hot spring water, which flows profusely into the baths, and the water is 3cm deep, creating ripples on the floor outside the baths

Additionally, the hot spring water flows out behind the inn, where there is a huge ochre-colored deposit made of solidified hot spring deposits, testifying to the richness of the hot spring's ingredients

Todo-ne means lying down on the floor around the bathtub and soaking in the overflowing water, allowing you to relax while listening to the sound of the water flowing. However, please note that this is not possible when there are many bathers
In fact, the previous owner of this inn decided to close down due to old age and other reasons, but a regular customer who regretted the decision took over the business in August 2023, and from October it has been open for guests, and now also serves meals
Please note that there are only eight guest rooms in the surrounding area, so reservations are required

summary
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment in fiscal year 2021, Aomori Prefecture is the fifth most hot spring prefecture in Japan (second in the Tohoku region) with 124 hot spring resorts
From among these many hot springs, we have selected three springs with spring water qualities that are rarely found in other prefectures
Both springs are rich in minerals and have highly beneficial effects, but because the water is so strong and concentrated, bathing in them for long periods of time just because it is good for your body could actually make you sick
When bathing, try not to stay in the bath for too long, and get out frequently to take a break before getting back in again, so you can enjoy the bath without overexerting yourself
