Saito Mokichi Memorial Day (Yamagata Prefecture)

May 14th, 1882, the birthday of Saito Mokichi, a poet who wrote many tanka poems and essays from the Meiji to Showa periods and who also worked as a psychiatrist.The Saito Mokichi Memorial Museum in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture, his birthplace, has designated this day as "Saito Mokichi Memorial Day" to commemorate his achievements

Saito Mokichi left behind excellent essays such as "The Danube Genryū," "Nenjushu," and "Doba Sanbo Yawa," and his talent was highly praised by the likes of Uno Koji and Akutagawa Ryunosuke. During his lifetime, he published a total of 17 volumes of poetry anthologies, composing a total of 17,907 poems

It is said that when Akutagawa Ryunosuke was asked who he would most like to have write a novel for him, he immediately named Saito Mokichi
