July 25, 1933 , was designated as "Highest Temperature Day" in commemoration of the record-breaking temperature of 40.8°C recorded in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, the first time such a temperature had ever been recorded at the time

This record remained the highest in Japan for a long time, and was broken for the first time in about 74 years in 2007 when a temperature of 40.9 degrees was recorded in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture and Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture

However, the record for the highest temperature continues to be broken. The current highest temperature ever recorded in Japan41.8°C, which was observed on August 5, 2025, in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture.
