The day the Toya Maru ferry accident occurred (Aomori Prefecture)

On September 26, 1954 , the Toya Maru, a ferry operated by the Japanese National Railways (JNR) that connected Aomori Port and Hakodate Port , departed Hakodate Port as Typhoon No. 15 approached. However, it was caught in a fierce storm and high waves, and capsized and sank off Nanaehama in Hakodate Bay .

In this accident, a total of 1,155 people , including passengers and crew , lost their lives on the Toya Maru. Furthermore, the same typhoon caused the sinking of the cargo ships "Dai-juichi Seikan Maru," "Kitami Maru," "Tokachi Maru," and "Hidaka Maru," bringing the total number of casualties across all five ships to 1,430. Typhoon No. 15 later came to be known as the "Toya Maru Typhoon" due to this devastating maritime disaster

Following the accident, the hull structure and operational management of the ferry were reviewed, and safety measures were strengthened, including the installation of doors on the vehicle loading ports at the stern. This also became one of the major catalysts for the realization of the long-standing Seikan Tunnel concept
