Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture the birthplace of Japan's modern steel industry and known as the "town of steel," and its symbol is the Kamaishi Mines Tanaka Steel Works (now the Kamaishi District of Nippon Steel's Kita-Nippon Works).

In 1883 (Meiji 16), Tanaka Chobei, a rice merchant with a shop in Kitakonyacho, Kyobashi, Tokyo, was approached by Matsukata Masayoshi, who was the Minister of Finance at the time, and began rebuilding the failed government-run Kamaishi Iron Works, .

After repeated failures, on October 16, 1886 (Meiji 19) , after a total of 49 attempts, they finally succeeded in producing pig iron for the first time .

To commemorate this, October 16th became the founding anniversary of the Kamaishi Steel Works .
