Asteroid Izumi was discovered on January 5, 1989 , by Masahiro Koishikawa, an astronomer from Miyagi Prefecture, at the Aiko Observatory of the Sendai Astronomical Observatory

It was named after Izumi Ward, one of the administrative districts of Sendai City. Furthermore, the asteroid discovered by the same person on January 5, 1992, was named Zao
