The Shinsengumi, who were under the care of Matsudaira Katamori, the lord of the Aizu domain and Kyoto protector, came under the command of the Aizu domain during the Boshin War

Saito fought in the Battle of Shirakawaguchi and the Battle of Mother Pass, before retreating to Wakamatsu. While other Shinsengumi members continued to fight north, Saito remained in Aizu and continued to resist the new government forces outside Wakamatsu Castle together with Aizu samurai

After the surrender, he shared the same fate as the Aizu clan, and when the Tonan clan was established, he went to the Shimokita Peninsula as a retainer of the Tonan clan. At this time, he changed his name to Fujita Goro
