Hideyo Noguchi, a physician and bacteriologist, is known for his research on yellow fever and syphilis as a researcher at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in the United States. He was born on November 9, 1876 (Meiji 9) in Mitsuwa Village, Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture (present-day Inawashiro Town, Yama District), as the eldest son of Sayosuke Noguchi and Shika Noguchi.

He contracted yellow fever himself while researching the disease, and died on May 21, 1928 , at the age of 51, in Accra, British Gold Coast (present-day Ghana)
