Hakkoda Mountain Day (Aomori Prefecture)

January 23rd is designated as "Mount Hakkoda Day" commemoration of the Hakkoda Snow March Disaster (1902, Meiji 35)

At the time, the 5th Infantry Regiment of the 8th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army was conducting snow marching training in the frigid Mount Hakkoda. However, a combination of severe snowstorms, poor judgment, and a lack of equipment and knowledge resulted in one of the worst mountain disasters in Japanese history, with 199 of the 210 participants losing their lives (6 of whom died after being rescued)
