Kitekerokun, the tourism PR character for Yamagata Prefecture, was created on May 22, 2013

This local character, which was created as a mascot for the Yamagata Destination Campaign held in 2013 (Heisei 25), resembles the shape of Yamagata prefecture in the shape of a person's profile. The name comes from "kitekero," which means "please come" in Yamagata dialect

May 22nd is the anniversary of the death of the haiku poet Kawai Sora, and is known as "Sora-ki," a summer seasonal word in haiku .

Kawai Sora was a haiku poet in the mid-Edo period and is counted as one of the Ten Disciples of Basho , having accompanied Matsuo Basho on his journey through Oshu and Hokuriku as described in "The Narrow Road to the Deep North."
