The Sanriku Railway Rias Line is the general term for the Sanriku Railway railway lines that connect Mori Station in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, and Kuji Station in Kuji City.

Due to historical circumstances at the time of construction, the Rias Line

  • Between Sakari Station and Kamaishi Station (South Rias Line) and between Miyako Station and Kuji Station (North Rias Line) are JNR > Sanriku Railway
  • Between Kamaishi Station and Miyako Station (Rias Line) is the Ministry of Railways Yamada Line > Japanese National Railways > JR East

The operating company was separate

The South Rias Line and the North Rias Line suffered extensive damage from the tsunami caused by the Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake (Great East Japan Earthquake) that occurred on March 11, 2011, but were fully restored by April 6, 2014. JR East carried out restoration work on the JR Yamada Line between Miyako Station and Kamaishi Station, which was located between the South and North Rias Lines, before transferring the line to Sanriku Railway.
