December 20, 1879 (Meiji 12) , was designated as "Foghorn Memorial Day" because it was the first steam-powered foghorn (fog signal station) in Japan installed at the Shiriyazaki Lighthouse in Higashidori Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture

A steam-powered foghorn (fog signal station)is a device that uses sound to signal the approximate position and direction to ships when visibility is poor due to fog, blizzards, etc.

Shiriyazaki Lighthouse is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and is one of Japan's 50 Best Lighthouses. In addition, horses called Kandachime horses are grazed around the lighthouse
