On November 10, 1937 (Showa 12), the section between Sakunami Station on the Miyagi Prefecture side and Yamadera Station on the Yamagata Prefecture side, separated by the prefectural border, opened. This connected the sections that had previously been operated separately in Sendai and Yamagata, completing a railway line linking the two cities

The Senzan Line is characterized by railway facilities unique to a route running through mountainous areas, such as the Senzan Tunnel that runs through the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, and the Second Hirosegawa Bridge, also known as the Kumagane Railway Bridge. In addition, AC electrification tests were conducted on the Senzan Line in 1954, playing a role in the subsequent electrification of railways in Japan
