On September 23, 1871 (Meiji 4) , Aomori Prefecture was established, changing its name from Hirosaki Prefecture

Going back a bit further, on July 14, 1871 (Meiji 4) , the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures resulted in the creation of five prefectures in what is now Aomori Prefecture: Hirosaki Prefecture ( Hirosaki Domain), Kuroishi Prefecture (Kuroishi Domain), Tonami Prefecture (Tonami Domain), Shichinohe Prefecture (Shichinohe Domain), and Hachinohe Prefecture (Hachinohe Domain), which inherited the former feudal domains. On September 4 of the same year, these five prefectures merged with Tate Prefecture (Tate Domain), which had been established on the Oshima Peninsula in Hokkaido, to form Hirosaki Prefecture.

However, 19 days later, on September 23rd, the prefectural office was moved from Hirosaki to Aomori, and the decision was made by Noda Hiromichi, the first prefectural chief councilor, to change the name of the prefecture to Aomori Prefecture
