[Craft beer from Miyagi Prefecture (northern prefecture area)] 5 breweries with unique flavors!

Microbreweries producing craft beer in the area north of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture can be divided into two types: long-established breweries that have been brewing "local beer" since the end of the 20th century, and new breweries that have started brewing with the hope of helping the coastal areas affected by the disaster recover

Long-established breweries brew traditional beers in the authentic German style, while new microbreweries in coastal areas produce a wide variety of ales, including pale ales and IPAs

BLACK TIDE BREWING (Kesennuma City)

This brewery was established in 2020 under the concept of "building a community through craft beer" in the hopes of helping with the recovery and reconstruction of Kesennuma, which suffered major damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake

They brew a variety of styles, from IPAs, hazy beers, saisons, and lagers, using different recipes each time, and release more than four new products per month, so their website features more than 80 types of beer!

Galya Beer (Onagawa Town)

Onagawa Town also suffered great damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake, with 80% of the town washed away

This microbrewery specializes in pace ales and was established in 2021 by its owner, who is originally from Onagawa, in an effort to revitalize the town

The attached taproom pours up to 10 different craft beers from 10 taps into your glass, and beers from other breweries are also available, so you can enjoy comparing them

In January 2022, they successfully crowdfunded a large prefabricated refrigerator to sell bottled beer. The project is currently underway, so until they are able to order beer online, please enjoy freshly brewed beer in the store

Naruko no Kaze (Osaki City)

Naruko Onsen Brewery, a locally based brewery located in Onikobe Onsen in the Naruko Onsen area, has been brewing unique craft beers since 1999 using local ingredients and high-quality water

At the attached restaurant, you can enjoy delicious food along with these beers, low-malt beers, and doburoku sake

Naruko no Kaze's recommended classic beer

  • Highland Lager : A traditional lager beer made with plenty of barley malt.
  • Wild grapes : Fruity and slightly sweet, similar to a cocktail or wine.
  • Yukimusubi : Made with local rice "Yukimusubi," it has a sweet and sour taste similar to champagne.

Yakurai Beer (Kami Town)

Yakurai Craft Beer Brewery has been brewing craft beer within the Kami Town General Exchange Terminal Facility since 1999

The water used for brewing is "Funagata no Hisui," a natural water from the foot of Mt. Yakurai, drawn from a glacial layer beneath the town

You can enjoy beer made with this water and made from 100% German malt at the attached restaurant, Restaurant Buna

  • Pilsner : Clear golden color, refreshing taste and moderate bitterness
  • Weizen : A fruity white beer made with 50% wheat malt, with a banana aroma and a rich taste.

[Production to cease in 2023] Matsushima Beer (Ogo Town)

Located in Osato Town, inland from Matsushima, in the "Land of Dreams" where you can enjoy hot springs and local beer, this brewery is Miyagi Prefecture's first craft beer brewery and has been brewing beer since 1997

This authentic German beer is brewed by a German brewmaster using ingredients such as malt, hops, yeast, and yeast imported from Germany, and tastes just like the real thing

In addition to their own products, they also brew a large amount of beer on contract from all over the country

Matsushima Beer's recommended classic beers

  • Helles: A pilsner characterized by the sweet aroma of malt and a smooth finish with little bitterness
  • Weizen: Wheat banana aroma with a subtle bitterness, and a cloudy amber color from live yeast
  • Dunkel: Roasted malt aroma, bitter and rich, yet easy to drink
  • Bock: Miyagi Prefecture's first craft beer, with a rich flavor and strong carbonation from the generous use of malt
