On January 3, 1912 (Meiji 45), the Shirase expedition confirmed the existence of the Antarctic continent, and on January 16, they made the first landing on Antarctica, naming the bay "Kainan Bay."

On January 28, upon reaching 80 degrees 05 minutes south latitude and 156 degrees 37 minutes west longitude, he designated this as his final destination, named the area"Yamato Snowfield,"and declared sovereignty by prior occupation, following the example of Ernest Shackleton. However, it was later discovered that this location was an ice shelf and not land that could be claimed.

He returned to base on January 31st. He left behind achievements such as naming the bay at the connection point of the Edward VII Peninsula "Okuma Bay" after his patron, Shigenobu Okuma

They left Antarctica on February 4th and all members returned safely to Japan
